Lookin' Back at Myself
Reflections of Time: Aaron Tippin's Journey in 'Lookin' Back at Myself'Lyrics
I put down my razor
I stopped shaving.
Toweled off my face
I dried my face with a towel.
Thought I saw a new wrinkle
I noticed a new wrinkle on my face.
And another strand of gray
I observed another strand of gray hair.
That one little scar
A scar on my face drew my attention.
Kept catching my eye
The scar kept attracting my gaze.
Reminding me how time does fly
It reminded me of how quickly time passes.
I was only a kid
I was young when I experienced certain events.
When I had that first fight
I was young when I had my first fight.
But I still don't give in
I still stand my ground when I believe I'm right.
When I believe that I'm right
I stick to my convictions.
And at least I can stand here
I can look at myself and feel content.
And like what I see
I'm satisfied with who I've become.
In the man that kid turned out to be
I am proud of the person I've grown into.
Lookin back at myself
Reflecting on my past self.
It's plain to see
I can clearly see.
That the cold hands of time
Time has been unforgiving.
Ain't had much mercy on me
Time has not been kind to me.
But I played a straight game
I've dealt with life as it came.
With the cards that were dealt
I've managed with the hand I've been given.
And I can look straight ahead
I can face the future confidently.
Lookin'back at myself
Looking back on my life.
Now I ain't been no angel
I haven't been perfect.
But I learned right from wrong
I've learned from my mistakes.
Thanks to mamma and a hickory
Thanks to my mother's guidance and discipline.
And a love so strong
Her love was strong and influential.
Yes she taught the rule
She taught me important life lessons.
That life is lived by
Life follows certain principles.
I ain't forgot what you get
I remember the consequences of misbehaving.
For getting'out of line
There are consequences for breaking the rules.
Now this old world throws some punches
Life presents challenges.
And I've taken a few
I've faced difficulties.
Now my skin's tough as leather
I've become resilient.
But I've grown strong with the truth
But I've grown stronger through honesty.
There's been so many times I could've just stepped aside
There were moments I could've avoided.
Ah but then I couldn't stand here with this peace of mind
But I wouldn't have this peace of mind.
Lookin'back at myself
Reflecting on my past self.
It's plain to see
I can clearly see.
That the cold hands of time
Time has been unforgiving.
Ain't had much mercy on me
Time has not been kind to me.
But I played a straight game
I've dealt with life as it came.
With the cards that were dealt
I've managed with the hand I've been given.
And I can look straight ahead
I can face the future confidently.
Lookin'back at myself
Looking back on my life.
Still look straight ahead
I can confidently look ahead.
Lookin back at myself
Reflecting on my past experiences.
