Though Geordie's a man I hav'ny seen lately,
Geordie, a man not seen lately.

Says I, "Do ye think that he's still off the drink?"
Asking if Geordie is still avoiding alcohol.

Contrary to expectations, Geordie is drinking again.

Despite promises, Geordie falls back into his old habits.

Then swore no to back them again.
Geordie decided not to bet on horses but reneged on his decision.
All his horses got bate, he had devil a hate;
Geordie's horses consistently lose, but he persists.

Geordie returns to betting on horses despite previous losses.

Geordie fails to keep promises when not monitored.

The Baliff caught Geordie doon poachin' the salmon,
Geordie caught poaching salmon by the Baliff.
And off to the court he was taen;
Geordie taken to court for poaching.
But the truth for to tell, he'd a rest in his cell;
Despite the legal consequences, Geordie finds some comfort in jail.

Geordie returns to illegal activities after facing consequences.
