Lyrics

Freedom Is At Hand

Freedom is within reach or achievable.

We have walked all the highways

We've traveled extensively.

Yet where have we gone

We've made progress, but the destination or real change remains unclear.

We planted dreams along the byways

We've nurtured aspirations along less traveled paths.

What else is there to be done

What more can we do?

We spoke of peace, pure and simple

We advocated for simple, uncomplicated peace.

They seemed not to understand

Our message was not comprehended by others.

We asked them to free our people

We requested the liberation of our people.

They said, "Freedom is at hand."

They asserted that freedom is imminent or close.

REFRAIN:

Chorus or recurring theme.

We asked, "Is freedom a farmer with no land to farm?

Is freedom possible for a farmer without land to cultivate?

Is freedom a fisher with no river to fish?

Is freedom feasible for a fisherman without a river to fish in?

Is freedom a worker with no place to work?"

Is freedom viable for a worker without a workplace?

Yet they said, "Freedom is at hand."

Despite these concerns, they maintain that freedom is near.

Guns cried out as night drew near

Violence erupted as darkness approached.

We hurried for home

We rushed home.

To our children aged in fear

Our frightened children, whose hopes seem unattainable.

Whose dreams are made of stone

Our children's aspirations feel unachievable or solidified like stone.

"Peace," we said, "is not an empty plate

Peace is not merely the absence of hunger.

Nor a man with no land.

Freedom necessitates possessing land.

Freedom we can no longer wait."

We can't delay our quest for freedom any longer.

They said, "Freedom is at hand." (REFRAIN)

Despite our urgency, they insist that freedom is near. (Chorus repeated)
