Expressing the search for a new belief system.

Is my church makes me fall asleep

Criticizing the boredom induced by the current religious experience.

They're praising a God that watches you weep

Describing a deity indifferent to human suffering.

And doesn't want you to do a damn thing about it

Criticizing the inaction promoted by the church.

When they want change the preacher says "shout it"

Mocking the ineffectiveness of shouting for change.

Does shouting bring about change ? I doubt it

Doubting the impact of shouting on bringing about change.

All shouting does is make you lose your voice

Highlighting the futility of shouting.

So on the dock I sit in silence

Choosing silence over ineffective actions.

Staring at a sea that's full of violence

Observing the violence in the world from the dock.

Scared to put my line in that water

Fear of engaging with the troubled world.

Coz it seems like there's no religion in there

Skepticism about finding true spirituality in the troubled world.

Naively so I give it another go

Optimistically giving religion another chance.

Sitting in church hearing legitimate woes

Attending church and hearing genuine problems.

Pastor tells the lady it'll be alright

Assuring someone in distress about an afterlife.

Just pray so you can see the pearly gates so white

Encouraging prayer as a solution to problems.

The lady prays and prays and prays and prays

Depicting persistent and fervent prayer.

And prays and prays and prays and prays it's everlasting

Emphasizing the enduring nature of prayer.

"There's nothing wrong with praying ?" It's what she's asking

Raising a question about the effectiveness of prayer.

She's asking the Lord to let her cope

Pleading with a higher power for coping ability.

So one day she can see the golden ropes

Desiring a glimpse of an idealized afterlife.

What you pray for God will give

Belief that prayers will be answered.

To be able to cope in this world we live

Seeking coping skills for life's challenges.

The word "cope" and the word "change"

Highlighting the contrast between coping and changing.

Is directly opposite, not the same

Asserting that coping and change are not synonymous.

She should have been praying to change her woes

Criticizing the focus on coping rather than changing.

But pastor said "Pray to cope with those"

Blaming the pastor for promoting coping over change.

The government is happy with most baptist churches

Criticizing certain churches for inaction and conformity.

Coz they don't do a damn thing to try to nurture

Accusing some churches of not contributing to social progress.

Brothers and sisters on a revolution

Commenting on the passivity encouraged by some religious teachings.

Baptist teaches dying is the only solution

Alleging that certain churches promote death as a solution.

Passiveness causes others to pass us by

Stressing the negative impact of passivity on progress.

I throw my line till I've made my decision

Continuing the search for a belief system.

Until then, I'm still fishin' 4 religion

Expressing a commitment to continue searching for religion.
