When I was a girl, at the start of my youth
Reflecting on childhood and the beginning of personal development.
I was said to be special, I was something new
Being considered unique or special during early years.
We took it as gospel, it molded our truth
Accepting beliefs as truths that shaped one's perception.
So I set sail young, as my knowledge grew
Embarking on a journey of self-discovery as knowledge grows.
So did I, in the sea, lost my first baby tooth
Symbolic loss of innocence in the challenges of life (losing a baby tooth).
Then the water grew rocky, sky lost it's blue
Facing difficulties and challenges represented by turbulent waters and a changing sky.
Alone in my boat I didn't know how to self-soothe
Feeling isolated and struggling to cope with personal challenges.
But I know now, my boat had a crew
Realizing the presence of a supportive community or "crew."
They didn't rock the boat as I battled the water
The crew providing stability during personal struggles.
No, they only observed as the waves crashed harder
Observers rather than active participants in the individual's challenges.
How they witnessed a child as the whole sea fought her
Witnessing the individual facing formidable obstacles and feeling abandoned.
Said something 'bout strength, then just forgot her
The crew acknowledging strength but ultimately forgetting or neglecting the individual.
Amazes me
An expression of wonder or disbelief at the crew's actions.
Hit land, a beach then forest stood
Transitioning to a new phase, encountering a beach and a forest.
My boat washed away with my childhood
Symbolic loss of childhood as the boat (security) is lost.
I headed for forest as anyone would
Choosing the path of personal growth represented by heading for the forest.
My crew kept to shadows, didn't help like they should
The crew staying in the shadows, not providing expected assistance.
But if I found a child lost in the woods
Expressing a desire to help others in need, contrasting the crew's actions.
I'd build them a shelter as quick as I could
Being a source of comfort and protection for those in distress.
My coat becomes blanket, huddled up in the hood
Transforming personal resources into a shield for others.
I'd keep evil out, I'd help them find good
Commitment to keeping negativity away and guiding towards goodness.
If the darkness got through our makeshift shelter
Preparing for potential darkness and challenges in the makeshift shelter.
I'd teach her to fight, find her the nearest welder
Teaching resilience and providing tools to face adversity.
I'd pay for her shield and sword, I'd fucking help her
Expressing a willingness to support and invest in someone's defense.
I'd be everything she needs, I'd show her how elders
Becoming a mentor or guide for a younger individual.
Should be
Reiterating the expectation of how elders should behave.
Should be
Repeating the expectation for responsible elder behavior.
But the woods are empty, it's just me now grown (Woods)
Returning to the present, feeling alone in the grown forest.
No child to save but the one in my bones
Lamenting the absence of others, acknowledging personal struggles.
The crew left the forest once I called it home (Crew)
The crew leaving, possibly due to the individual considering the forest home.
And I put up my hood, made shelter alone
Creating personal shelter and independence.
I resent them for seeing all they were shown
Expressing resentment towards the crew for abandoning the individual.
And leaving me to figure it out on my own
Dealing with life challenges independently and self-discovery.
But If I showed the crew
Contemplating revealing personal struggles to the crew.
All that I've been through
Anticipating the crew's acknowledgment of past struggles.
They'd say "we should've known"
Predicting the crew's response expressing regret or realization.
But I've known they've known
Believing the crew was aware of the individual's struggles all along.
Cause how could they not have known?
Reiterating the perceived awareness of the crew.
How could they not have known?
Questioning the crew's lack of action or support despite awareness.
How could they not?
Repeating the disbelief at the crew's inaction or lack of understanding.
