So I try to keep those strings on my mind

It took me long to build up my empire
It took a considerable time to establish my empire.

My empire is now described as one of decay or ruin.
Now I try to find the tools to make it glare
Now I am seeking the means to make it shine or stand out.
Some glue, some make up... not to collapse
This involves using tools like glue and makeup to prevent collapse.
I tried that shortcut a thousand times
I have attempted a shortcut many times without reaching a destination.
It never led me nowhere
The shortcut has never led me anywhere.
I heard that song so many times
I have heard a particular song numerous times.
I could have sung it by heart
I am so familiar with the song that I could sing it from memory.
