They Know Me
Shadows of Deceit: Aurelio Voltaire's Tale of False HeroesLyrics
He slips in through the back door
He enters discreetly from an unconventional entry point.
And helps himself to the patients' medicine.
He takes medication belonging to the patients.
And he likes to look important.
He enjoys appearing significant or essential.
And he always looks like he's important.
His demeanor consistently suggests importance.
And each tale that he tells of the lives that he's saved
He narrates stories of saving lives, but they're actually leading to his downfall.
Is a spade full of dirt as he's digging his grave.
His tales of heroism are actually worsening his situation.
And the deep blackened hollow he's patched with a badge
His superficial achievements mask inner emptiness.
Is the happiness he's never had, and he says,
His façade of contentment is derived from these superficial accomplishments.
"It's all right, they know me here.
He reassures himself that his actions are accepted or tolerated.
It's all right, they know me, they know me."
He feels recognized or acknowledged despite his questionable deeds.
His flames are yesterdays tinsel
His past achievements or successes are now meaningless.
And his belly's the sail that propels him
His greed or desires are leading him into perilous situations.
Onto the rocks.
He's heading towards ruin or disaster.
And you know that even the noble Don Quixote would
Even someone as honorable as Don Quixote would recognize his faults easily.
Call him a mile away for a windmill.
His flaws are conspicuous to anyone paying attention.
And each Sunday that passes he's rid of his sins
Every passing week allows him to continue his wrongdoings without guilt.
And he's ready to do them all over again.
He's unrepentant and ready to repeat his mistakes.
And God won't be mad for the money he stole,
He believes God won't judge him for the money he's stolen.
He put some in the offering bowl.
He donates stolen money to a religious cause to ease his guilt.
And he says......
He continues...
Soon comes the moment that all souls await,
He anticipates a crucial moment in the afterlife.
Just as sure as St. Peter will padlock the gate.
He believes in a symbolic event of judgment, like St. Peter closing the gate.
But deep in his wallet's a shiny new coin
He possesses something that he believes will grant him favor or pardon.
So, he turns and he winks and says......
He smugly acknowledges something to the devils or adversaries.
Devils, for liars, put brands on the fires
Consequences await those who deceive, and he implies that everyone faces punishment.
And everyone burns with your glowing, red name on it.
He's reached a place where his reputation precedes him.
Finally, you've come to a place where they
He has finally arrived at a location where his actions are recognized.
Know you well.
He's acknowledged or familiar to others for his deeds.
