He wakes up in the morning and he downs milk and brandy to be fit

Greg starts his day with a mix of milk and brandy for energy.

Then he takes his bonny hat and knotty stick

He puts on his hat and takes his stick, preparing for the day.

Cursing all the cowards who always steal his spuds

Greg curses those who steal his potatoes (spuds).

He walks up in the woods and trips all over the roots

While walking in the woods, Greg stumbles over roots.

Then he hears a fuss among the branches right ahead of him

He hears a commotion in the branches and encounters a billy goat.

A billygoat appears and so the fight begins

A confrontation with the billy goat ensues, and Greg ends up in thorns.

It charges Mr. Greg with his hooves, with his horns

Thus landing the young man amid the brambles and the thorns

Mr. Greg takes the stick that he's brought along

Greg uses his stick to fight and defeat the billy goat.

And breaks it on its stubborn head

He's mighty, he's bad, he's pretty strong

That's what happens when the lad gets mad.

Greg is described as mighty and bad when angered.

Fifteen pints of beer dealt out - on a busy day of work

After a day's work, Greg is ready to go home after consuming beer.

Mr. Greg's set and ready to go home

But once he's reached his garden- in his heavy trot

At home, Greg finds a man ruining his potatoes, leading to a confrontation.

He sees a man who's standing in the middle of his plot

The man is messing up all the spuds Greg the farmer cares about

Wreaking havok and trampling left and right

-

He yells to the old man: "will you please get out?"

He feels his anger rising and he's ready for the fight.

Greg fights and defeats the intruder with his stick again.

Mr. Greg takes the stick that he's brought along

And breaks it on its stubborn head

He's mighty, he's bad, he's pretty strong

That's what happens when the lad gets mad.

Having won the fight Mr. Greg says: "I deserve a pint"

Greg decides he deserves a pint, but the pub is closed, and everyone has gone home.

And so he walks to reach the tavern's lights

But when the moon is well up high-in the cloudy sky

-

The pub gets shut and all the lads go home to spend the night

-

The door is closed, the lights are down, outside - there's a woman that's quite angered

Greg returns home late, upsetting his wife, who expresses anger.

He's a-swaying and rolling, for now he's really langered

He hears a fancy voice saying "Ye silly man, you're late!"

-

His wife looks pretty furious and her eyes are full of hate.

Greg's wife takes the stick that she's brought along

Greg's wife confronts him with a stick, mirroring Greg's earlier actions, illustrating the cycle of anger and confrontation.

And breaks it on his stubborn head.

That's what happens when the lass gets mad.
