When I Was a Young Girl
Wisdom Unveiled: Embracing Life's Lessons with Bettye LaVetteLyrics
When I was a young girl, advice I would scorn
As a young girl, I disregarded advice.
Now I'm gettin' a little older, I know I got a lot to learn
Now that I'm older, I recognize my need to learn more.
Yesterday's illusions are tomorrow's smiles
What I perceived as real or achievable in the past now brings smiles looking back.
I'll look back and laugh baby, sometimes in a while
I'll reminisce and find humor in those past moments occasionally.
When I was a young girl, advice I would scorn
Reiteration of disregarding advice when young.
Now I'm gettin' a little older, I know I got a lot to learn
Acknowledgment of needing to learn more as one ages.
Yesterday's illusions are tomorrow's smiles
Reflection on past illusions that now bring contentment.
I'll look back and laugh baby, sometimes in a while
Anticipating future moments of looking back with amusement.
When I was a young girl, advice I would scorn
Continued disregard for advice during youth.
Now I'm gettin' a little older, I know I got a lot to learn
Understanding the importance of learning due to aging.
Yesterday's illusions are tomorrow's smiles
Recognition of how past perceptions evolve into sources of joy.
I'll look back and laugh baby, sometimes in a while
Expectation of future laughter at past experiences.
And it always seems the same and who knows what to blame
Observation that situations often repeat, uncertain of the cause.
If I knew then what I know now, the mistakes I wouldn't have made
If I had known then what I know now, I could have avoided past mistakes.
But you can't get a sneak preview over what you're gonna go through
Realization that foresight isn't possible regarding life's challenges.
And you have to rely on your body and mind to see the light from shade
We must rely on our instincts and experiences to navigate difficulties.
Life's the same but time does change perspective of your view
Seeking mysteries or answers, yet unable to find them.
You're lookin' for a mystery but you can't find a clue
Debate between personal agency and destiny in shaping life.
Some say a man makes his life, some say that it's fate
Some believe in personal control, others in fate.
But when you find out what to do, oh sometimes it's too late
Discovering the right path sometimes happens too late.
