Lyrics

I stepped out of the rain into a downtown city cafe

Seeking shelter from the rain, entered a city café

And I saw him at the counter looking lonesome at the rain

Observed a lonely individual at the counter amidst the rain

I sat down beside him and I ordered us some coffee

Sat next to him and ordered coffee for both

He smiled and said

Introduced himself as "City Country" with intentions to partake in city life

Hello city country is my name and I'm here to play your city game

Expressed a desire to engage in city life despite inherent rural roots

I saw there in his eyes such a pure and simple beauty

Recognized a genuine, simple beauty in his eyes

That could not have been bred upon these dark and dingy streets

Contrasted his purity with the surroundings of the city

I liked the look he gave me and I asked him if he'd stay

Appreciated his gaze and invited him to stay

And he said

Expressed willingness to stay temporarily and a need for shelter

Maybe for a while till I get back on my feet and I sure could use a place to sleep

Desire for the comforts of home and a longing for familiar country life

Lay lay country lay on my mind home is where the lovin' heart is beating free

Expressed a longing for the essence of the countryside

Lay lay country lay on my mind

Reiterated a yearning for the country life in one's thoughts

For deep inside these city lies a whole lot of country in me

Acknowledged rural roots within despite being in a city environment

A whole lot of country in me

Reaffirmed the presence of rural values within oneself

The days we spent laughin' and just walkin' in the park

Recalled joyful moments spent together in leisure

And the nights we spent in each other's arms

Remembered intimate moments shared at night

But time brought a change that brought him tossed and tumbled sleep

Signified a change leading to hardship and restlessness in sleep

And I heard him mumble somethin' about a baby and a farm

Mentioned responsibilities towards a child and a farm

I've gotta go make sure they're safe and warm

Expressed urgency to ensure the safety of loved ones

I woke up this morning and I opened up my eyes

Awoke to witness him leaving

Just in time to see him walkin' out the door

Despite his departure, held onto joyful memories

But I had dreams and feelings that would always keep me happy

Had dreams and sentiments that brought happiness despite knowing he won't return

Even though I knew I wouldn't see him anymore so I just let him close the door

Accepted his departure and let him go

Lay lay country lay on my mind...

Reiterated a longing for the country life in one's thoughts

Lay lay country lay on my mind...

Reaffirmed the presence of rural values within oneself
