Lyrics

While riding on a train goin' west,

Reflecting on a train journey heading west.

I fell asleep for to take my rest.

Fell asleep during the journey to rest.

I dreamed a dream that made me sad,

Had a dream that evoked sadness.

Concerning myself and the first few friends I had.

Reflecting on himself and early friends.

With half-damp eyes I stared to the room

Gazing with half-damp eyes into a room.

Where my friends and I spent many an afternoon,

Recalling moments spent with friends in that room.

Where we together weathered many a storm,

Shared experiences and endured storms together.

Laughin' and singin' till the early hours of the morn.

Laughed and sang till early morning.

By the old wooden stove where our hats was hung,

Describing the setting by an old stove where hats were hung.

Our words were told, our songs were sung,

Conversations and songs shared in that space.

Where we longed for nothin' and were quite satisfied

Contentment and longing for nothing.

Talkin' and a-jokin' about the world outside.

Talking and joking about the world outside.

With haunted hearts through the heat and cold,

Haunted by memories through heat and cold.

We never thought we could ever get old.

Never anticipating the inevitability of aging.

We thought we could sit forever in fun

Believed they could remain in perpetual enjoyment.

But our chances really was a million to one.

Realized chances of this were minimal.

As easy it was to tell black from white,

Initially, distinctions were clear between black and white.

It was all that easy to tell wrong from right.

Decisions between right and wrong were equally clear.

And our choices were few and the thought never hit

Choices were limited, and the idea of the road splitting was unimaginable.

That the one road we traveled would ever shatter and split.

Realization that their chosen path would fracture over time.

How many a year has passed and gone,

Reflecting on the passage of many years.

And many a gamble has been lost and won,

Acknowledging the wins and losses of various gambles.

And many a road taken by many a friend,

Friends took different paths, never to be seen again.

And each one I've never seen again.

Expressing a longing to return to that room.

I wish, I wish, I wish in vain,

Expressing a desperate wish for a return to the past.

That we could sit simply in that room again.

A specific desire to be in that room again.

Ten thousand dollars at the drop of a hat,

A hyperbolic expression of willingness to give a large sum for the past.

I'd give it all gladly if our lives could be like that.

Willingness to sacrifice wealth for a return to the past.
