Encouraging contemplation while gazing on the mystery of God in human form.

And labour while ye gaze

Exhorting to explore the mystery while looking at the infant.

To sound the mystery:

Despite efforts, angels cannot fully comprehend the mystery.

In vain; ye angels gaze no more,

Angels fall in silent adoration as the mystery remains beyond their understanding.

But fall, and silently adore.

He deigns in flesh t’ appear,

Expressing the purpose of bridging extremes to bring humanity closer to God.

Widest extremes to join,

Describing the transformative impact of God's incarnation on humanity.

To bring our vileness near,

God's incarnation brings human vileness closer to divinity.

And make us all divine;

God's incarnation makes humanity divine.

And we the life of God shall know,

Humans will know the life of God through this incarnation.

For God is manifest below.

Reiterating that God is manifest below.


Made perfect first in love,

Describing the perfection of humanity achieved through love.

And sanctified by grace,

Stating that humanity is sanctified by grace.

We shall from earth remove,

Expressing the expectation of moving from earthly existence to seeing God's face.

And see his glorious face;

Anticipating the revelation of God's love when humans see His glorious face.

His love shall then be fully showed,

Emphasizing the complete manifestation of God's love at that time.

And man shall all be lost in God.

Anticipating the complete union of humanity with God.
