Let earth and heaven combine,
Expressing a desire for a unity between the earthly and heavenly realms.
Angels and men agree
Angels and humans agree to praise the divine in songs.
To praise in songs divine
Praising the incarnate deity through divine songs.
Th’ incarnate deity,
Referring to the deity in human form, emphasizing the divine becoming human.
Our God contracted to a span,
Describing God's contraction to a limited form, becoming comprehensible as a man.
Incomprehensibly made man.
Emphasizing the incomprehensible nature of God being made man.
Unsearchable the love
Describing the unfathomable love brought by the Savior.
That hath the Saviour brought,
Highlighting the grace surpassing human and angelic understanding.
The grace is far above
The grace is far beyond what humans or angels can think.
Or men or angel’s thought;
It is sufficient that God is manifest below.
Suffice for us, that God, we know,
Reflecting on the love of God manifested in the world.
Our God is manifest below.
Acknowledging the presence of God in the earthly realm.
He laid his glory by,
God humbled Himself by setting aside His glory.
He wrapped him in our clay,
Describing God wrapping Himself in human flesh.
Unmarked by human eye
Emphasizing the hidden Godhead in human form.
The latent Godhead lay;
God's latent divinity was not recognized by human eyes.
Infant of days he here became,
God became an infant, bearing the name Immanuel.
And bore the loved Immanuel’s name.
Describing the incarnation of God as a human.
See in that infant’s face
Inviting to see the depth of deity in the infant's face.
The depths of deity,
Encouraging contemplation while gazing on the mystery of God in human form.
And labour while ye gaze
Exhorting to explore the mystery while looking at the infant.
To sound the mystery:
Despite efforts, angels cannot fully comprehend the mystery.
In vain; ye angels gaze no more,
Angels fall in silent adoration as the mystery remains beyond their understanding.
But fall, and silently adore.

He deigns in flesh t’ appear,
Expressing the purpose of bridging extremes to bring humanity closer to God.
Widest extremes to join,
Describing the transformative impact of God's incarnation on humanity.
To bring our vileness near,
God's incarnation brings human vileness closer to divinity.
And make us all divine;
God's incarnation makes humanity divine.
And we the life of God shall know,
Humans will know the life of God through this incarnation.
For God is manifest below.
Reiterating that God is manifest below.
Made perfect first in love,
Describing the perfection of humanity achieved through love.
And sanctified by grace,
Stating that humanity is sanctified by grace.
We shall from earth remove,
Expressing the expectation of moving from earthly existence to seeing God's face.
And see his glorious face;
Anticipating the revelation of God's love when humans see His glorious face.
His love shall then be fully showed,
Emphasizing the complete manifestation of God's love at that time.
And man shall all be lost in God.
Anticipating the complete union of humanity with God.
