You stole the fire from the first storytellers and burned all that you feared
You took inspiration from the original storytellers and destroyed things you were afraid of.
Or so you'd hoped
Maybe you expected this outcome.
But smoldering coals
However, there were still some hidden embers.
Though ashen they seemed
Even though they appeared lifeless and gray.
Kept lighted a path
These embers illuminated a path.
A means to a dream that somewhere in a future time
This path represented a way to achieve a dream, believing that in the future...
There'd be an awakening of stronger minds and hearts won by truth
...there will be a resurgence of stronger, more enlightened individuals won over by truth.
Not by snake oil salespersons peddling falsehoods (they ask)
These individuals won't be swayed by deceptive salespeople.
Wouldn't I like a soul?
The question is posed about wanting a soul.
A fill for this hole? (I reply)
Asking if there's a need to fill a void.
A spirit I've got and my mind is not for rent
Declaring possession of a spirit and an unrentable mind.
If you want this corpse you can take it
Offering one's physical body if it's desired.
This life is all and enough
Believing that this current life is sufficient.
All beyond is shibboleth
Anything beyond this life is considered irrelevant.
If any ghosts should haunt my grave let them be all of my own make
Requesting that any haunting presence after death be a creation of one's own mind.
No deus ex machina, no bright guiding light
Rejecting the idea of a supernatural intervention or a guiding light.
I will not "go gently into that good night"
Refusing to pass away quietly or easily.
The fire next time is gonna put out the last
Indicating that a subsequent cataclysmic event will extinguish the previous one.
This desert will be converted to glass
Expressing a belief that the landscape will be drastically changed, potentially by destruction.
A reflection of the past at the very least
Suggesting that remnants of the past will still be visible in some form.
Remains to be seen
Emphasizing uncertainty about what will happen in the future.
