Over the battle fields of all the great wars since the beginning of time
Reflecting on the battlefields of historical wars throughout time.
Have walked perhaps the bravest heroes of them all
Acknowledging the bravery of unsung heroes, specifically the Chaplains.
The men known simply by the soldiers as the Chaplain
Referring to Chaplains, known to soldiers as spiritual guides.
And this is the story of but one of the many and many thousands
Telling the story of one Chaplain among the many who sacrificed.
Who gave his life in the service of his God and his country
Highlighting the sacrifice of those who gave their lives in service.
There's a star spangled heaven for every soldier boy
Describing a heavenly reward for soldiers who defend their country.
Who fights to keep our country clean and free
Encouraging soldiers to fight for a clean and free country.
So soldier trust in Jesus let him fill your heart with joy
Advising soldiers to trust in Jesus for eternal support and joy.
He'll stand by you throughout eternity
Expressing the promise of Jesus standing by soldiers throughout eternity.
And although army chaplain who was stopped and bent with years
Introducing an aged army chaplain walking on a battlefield.
Was walkin' o'er the battle field his old eyes filled with tears
Describing the emotional state of the chaplain as he walks.
He was searching for the wounded to try to ease their pain
Explaining the chaplain's mission to comfort and heal the wounded.
And for those he knew would never live to rise and fight again
Recognizing the inevitable loss of those who won't recover.
For life for them was over their earthly cares were done
Conveying that life is over for those who have died in battle.
They had gone to meet their Savior their battle had been won
Indicating that fallen soldiers have met their Savior in victory.
And I couldn't help but notice as he went from place to place
Noting the chaplain's observations of soldiers' expressions in death.
That each soldier boy had died fighting with a smile upon his face
Highlighting the soldiers' peaceful demeanor in death.
And I saw him kneel beside each one and slowly breathe the prayer
Observing the chaplain kneeling and praying for each fallen soldier.
While the tears were streamin' down his face and the wind blew through his hair
Describing the emotional scene with tears streaming down the chaplain's face.
And I could hear the big guns boomin' o'er the hill and not too far away
Setting the battlefield atmosphere with the sound of distant gunfire.
And as I turned to leave him that's when I heard him say
Indicating a turning point in the story, quoting the chaplain's words.

Though days and month and even years have slowly drifted by
Reflecting on the passage of time and the memories of fallen soldiers.
And all we have are the mem'ries of our boys who have to die
Expressing the enduring memories of soldiers who gave their lives.
They're living with their Savior beyond the crystal sea
Imagining fallen soldiers living with their Savior beyond death.
