When I first came into Saigon, I was a lonely soldier on leave
Upon my initial arrival in Saigon, I was a solitary soldier on a break from duty.
In the boonies the battles were raging but for a short time I was free
In remote areas, conflicts were ongoing, but briefly I experienced a sense of freedom.
I met her there in Saigon; her name was Miung Sun Lee
I encountered her in Saigon; her name was Miung Sun Lee.
And there's not another like her in that land far across the sea
She was unique and incomparable among the inhabitants of that distant land.
Her lips more precious than rubies, her eyes warm as summer skies
Her lips were more valuable than rubies, and her eyes were as comforting as summer skies.
Love found and bound us together, Miung Sun Lee and I
Love discovered and united us—Miung Sun Lee and me.
We lived each precious moment, we loved both night and day
We cherished each moment together, embracing love day and night.
For time stands still for no one, soon I'd be going away
Realizing that time progresses relentlessly, I knew I would soon have to depart.
My outfit moved out of Saigon back to the front lines
My military unit left Saigon and returned to the front lines of battle.
As a soldier I was bound to duty, but I left my heart behind
Though duty bound me as a soldier, emotionally, I left my heart with her.
All through the raging battles, I could feel her by my side
Throughout the intense battles, I felt her presence beside me.
I knew that she would be waiting, somehow I must stay alive
I was convinced she would wait for me, compelling me to survive somehow.
They carried me back into Saigon, my broke body to mend
After sustaining injuries, I was brought back to Saigon for medical treatment.
Suffering with pain, but happy knowing I'd see her again
Despite the pain, I found solace in the prospect of seeing her once more.
But nowhere there in Saigon could Miung Sun Lee be found
Unfortunately, Miung Sun Lee was nowhere to be found in Saigon.
For she had gone north to be with me, and she died near the battleground
She had ventured north to be with me and tragically died near the battleground.
And that's why I'll never leave here; this land is a part of me
Consequently, I am committed to never leaving this place as it holds a significant part of my being.
I'll stay here and do what I must do till its war-torn people are free
I will remain here and fulfill my obligations until the people affected by war achieve freedom.
And as I climb the hillside looking north to the battle ground
As I look northward toward the battleground, where Miung Sun Lee awaits, that is where I am destined.
Where Miung Sun Lee is waiting that's where I'm bound
My ultimate destination is where Miung Sun Lee is waiting for me.
