I came to the place where the lone pilgrim lay
I arrived at the place where the lone pilgrim was laid to rest.
And pensively stood by his tomb,
I stood thoughtfully near his tomb.
When in a low whisper I heard something say,
In a soft whisper, I heard something saying,
"How sweetly I sleep here alone.
"How peacefully I sleep here alone."
The tempest may howl and the loud thunder roar,
Storms may rage, and thunder may roar,
And gathering storms may arise,
And turbulent storms may emerge,
But calm is my feeling, at rest is my soul.
But I am calm, and my soul is at rest.
The tears are all wiped from my eyes.
All my tears have been wiped away.
The cause of my Master compelled me from home,
The cause of my commitment to my Master made me leave home.
No kindred or relative nigh.
No relatives or kin are close by.
I met the contagion and sank to the tomb,
I encountered a contagion and succumbed to the tomb.
My soul flew to mansions on high.
My soul ascended to heavenly mansions.
Go tell my companion and children most dear
Inform my companions and beloved children
To weep not for me now I'm gone.
Not to weep for me now that I'm gone.
The same hand that led me through scenes most severe
The same guiding hand that led me through severe experiences
Has kindly assisted me home."
