Lyrics

There are things sometimes I wish I'd told you

Expressing regret for unspoken words

But I've never liked to talk about the war

Aversion to discussing the war experience

We lied about our ages and although we were courageous

Admitting to lying about age and highlighting courage

We didn't know what was in store

Uncertainty about what the future held during the war

Won't you stay with me because I feel so cold

Seeking companionship due to emotional coldness

And I don't believe I'll see you the dawn

Doubt about surviving until the dawn

And if you don't mind I'd like a hand to hold

Request for emotional support and comfort

And treat me gentle in the morning

Desire for gentle treatment in the morning

At first we had to leave Kokoda

Recalling leaving Kokoda during the war

I saw a young man take a bullet on the way

Witnessing a fellow soldier getting shot

I hardly knew the bloke but I hear the words he spoke

Reflecting on the impact of a dying soldier's words

They still haunt me to this day

Haunted by the spoken words to this day

Won't you stay with me because I feel so cold

Seeking emotional warmth in the face of coldness

And I don't believe I'll see you the dawn

Expressing uncertainty about seeing the next day

And if you don't mind I'd like a hand to hold

Yearning for a supportive hand to hold

And treat me gentle in the morning

Desire for gentle treatment in the morning

So we carried him into the mountains

Describing efforts to help an injured comrade

Gave him water and some morphine for the pain

Providing medical aid and comfort to the wounded

Made him up a makeshift bed sowed him up with cat gut thread

Creating a makeshift bed and using cat gut thread

Then he asked me once again

Request for companionship once again

Won't you stay with me because I feel so cold

Reiterating the need for emotional warmth

And I don't believe I'll see you the dawn

Expressing doubt about surviving until dawn

And if you don't mind I'd like a hand to hold

Request for a comforting hand to hold

And treat me gentle in the morning

Desire for gentle treatment in the morning

He lasted just a few more hours

Narrating the short duration of a soldier's life

We were there to give him comfort through it all

Providing comfort to a dying soldier

We laid him down to rest, placed his rifle on his chest

Performing a solemn ritual for the deceased

Sang old Lang Syne as I recall

Recalling singing "Auld Lang Syne" during the burial

Won't you stay with me because I feel so cold

Repeating the need for emotional warmth

And I don't believe I'll see you the dawn

Expressing doubt about surviving until dawn

And if you don't mind I'd like a hand to hold

Request for a comforting hand to hold

And treat me gentle in the morning

Desire for gentle treatment in the morning

Perhaps one day you walk Kokoda

Encouraging others to walk the Kokoda Track

And the track it's self will test you to the core

Highlighting the challenging nature of the track

But you won't wake in fright from a mountain gun at night

Contrasting current safety with past wartime fear

So spare a thought for those before

Urging remembrance for those who faced challenges

Won't you stay with me because I feel so cold

Reiterating the need for emotional warmth

And I don't believe I'll see you the dawn

Expressing doubt about surviving until dawn

And if you don't mind I'd like a hand to hold

Request for a comforting hand to hold

And treat me gentle in the morning

Desire for gentle treatment in the morning
