We Are People Here. We Are Not Numbers
Navigating Love's Turbulence: An Intimate Carnival MemoryLyrics
In the infancy of our relationship,
In the early stages of our relationship,
when we were almost exclusively hanging out
During a time when our interactions were mostly with each other,
together with friends,
Especially when spending time with mutual friends,
Cathy and I went to St. John's Applefest
Cathy and I attended the St. John's Applefest,
It was held every fall in the parking lot of the Catholic church
This event occurred annually in the Catholic church parking lot,
I had attended as a youth,
The same church I had been part of during my youth,
converting the quarter-mile of parish grounds into a second-rate carnival
Transforming the parish grounds into a subpar carnival,
full of cheap thrills and poorly-maintained rides
Featuring inexpensive amusements and poorly maintained rides,
We meandered through the crowds
We strolled through the crowds,
like tourists,
Similar to sightseers,
eventually ending up at the pirate ship at the far end of the fair
Ultimately reaching the pirate ship at the fair's far end,
(A mechanical boat that rose into the sky,
Describing a mechanical boat ascending and descending like a swallow's flight,
then swooped back down in the other direction like a swallow diving for insects)
Cathy was nervous and began to fidget, refusing to get in line
Cathy felt uneasy and became restless, hesitant to join the queue,
before our friends and I talked her into going
Our friends and I persuaded her to participate,
When the ride started,
Once the ride commenced,
any romantic idea I had of holding hands or an embrace
Any romantic notions of hand-holding or embracing were abandoned,
was quickly abandoned when I saw the white-knuckled grip on the safety rail
Observing Cathy's tight grip on the safety rail as if fearing for her life,
like she feared for her life
