They're merely surviving and anticipating the impact of the impending issue.

Even though healing might have occurred, they wonder if they can escape their circumstances.
We're both just surviving and waiting
They hope that their bond or connection ("love") can help them overcome their struggles.
For it to hit
Considering using substances to cope with the harshness of reality.
You might've healed a bit
They acknowledge that their relationship might not withstand severe challenges.
Think we can make it out of it
Confronting the harshness of life and its challenges is acknowledged.
That "love" might carry us to the surface
Desire to hold onto each other during difficult times.
Maybe some drugs to face the cold
Despite knowing their destructive tendencies, they comprehend their actions.

Questioning their ability to endure the upcoming trial or hardship.

Again, acknowledging the lack of solace or respite for those consumed by anger.
And so we'll build a trench
They plan to support each other through difficult times symbolized by building a trench.
