Considering the hypothetical situation of an assassination.

Could trammel up the consequence, and catch

Exploring the idea that the consequences of the assassination could be contained.

With his surcease success that but his blow

Describing the hope that the success of the assassination would stop with the initial blow.

Might be the be-all and the end-all here,

Expressing the wish that the assassination could be the ultimate achievement.

But here, upon this bank and shoal of time,

Reflecting on the limitations and constraints of the current moment in the river of time.

We'ld jump the life to come.

Willing to sacrifice the afterlife for success in the present.

Recalling a persistent voice proclaiming that Macbeth will never sleep peacefully again.

Declaring that Glamis (Macbeth) will forever be haunted by the sleep of someone who has committed murder.

Reflecting on a recurring internal turmoil, interrupting a previously serene state.

Whole as the marble, founded as the rock,

Comparing the previous mental state to a solid and unyielding structure.

As broad and general as the casing air:

Describing the former state as vast and all-encompassing as the surrounding air.

But now I am cabin'd, cribb'd, confined, bound in

Expressing the current state of being confined and restricted.

To saucy doubts and fears

Feeling trapped in insolent uncertainties and fears.


What is that noise?

Reacting to a mysterious noise and seeking its source.

It is the cry of women, my good lord.

Explaining that the noise is the cry of women.

O, full of scorpions is my mind, dear wife!

Expressing the torment of a mind filled with disturbing thoughts, addressing the wife.

I have almost forgot the taste of fears

Forgetting the taste of fear due to overwhelming mental turmoil.

Wherefore was that cry?

Inquiring about the cause of the cry.

The queen, my lord, is dead.

Revealing that the queen is dead, explaining the cry.


She should have died hereafter

Expressing regret that the queen did not die later, at a more opportune time.

There would have been a time for such a word.

Reflecting on the nature of time and the postponement of certain words.

To-morrow, and to-morrow, and to-morrow,

Contemplating the relentless and monotonous passage of time.

Creeps in this petty pace from day to day

Describing the slow progression of time, day by day.

To the last syllable of recorded time,

Emphasizing the exhaustive recording of time until the end.

And all our yesterdays have lighted fools

Reflecting on the impact of past actions guiding foolish individuals towards inevitable death.

The way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle!

Rejecting the significance of life, comparing it to a brief candle.

Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player

Depicting life as a transient and insignificant shadow, with individuals merely playing their roles on the stage.

That struts and frets his hour upon the stage

Describing the fleeting nature of existence, characterized by agitation during one's brief time on the stage.

And then is heard no more: it is a tale

Viewing life as a tale narrated by an idiot, full of noise and fury but ultimately meaningless.

Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,

Concluding that life signifies nothing in the grand scheme of things.

Signifying nothing.

Finalizing the bleak outlook on life, suggesting its inherent lack of meaning.
