There's only one thing that I long for
Expressing a singular desire or goal.
When I reach my home on high
Anticipation of reaching a heavenly home.
To see my Jesus in His glory
Desire to witness Jesus in His glorious state.
And to reign with Him on high
Aspiration to reign with Jesus in the celestial realm.
I'll be so glad to see my mother
Eager anticipation of reuniting with the departed mother.
Who has gone, gone on to that land

Without a father, without a mother

I've had to make this journey by myself

Sometimes so friendless, heartaches seem endless
Acknowledgment of challenging times, including feelings of loneliness.
So many sorrows I have known
Recognition of numerous sorrows experienced.
But I know my Lord will call me
Confidence in being called by the Lord to a heavenly mansion.
To that mansion in the sky
Expectation of being summoned to a celestial dwelling.
And I shall reign with Him forever
Declaration of reigning eternally with Jesus.
In that sweet home by and by, ny and by
Envisioning a sweet home in the future.
So many times my heavy burden
Acknowledgment of life's burdens leading to prayer.
Have borne, borne me to my knees
Recognition of challenges bringing one to their knees.
But then I prayed, "Oh, blessed Jesus
Expressing a plea for assistance from Jesus.
Won't You help me if You please"
Request for help in times of need.
And He would hasten to my rescue
Describing Jesus' prompt response to prayers.
I no longer have to cry
Relief from the need to cry due to Jesus' intervention.
And so I'll keep my Savior with me
Commitment to keeping Jesus as a companion.
On my journey, journey to the sky
Acknowledgment of Jesus' presence on the journey to heaven.

Without a father, without a mother
