Lyrics

I was working in Miami for a day or two

I was temporarily employed in Miami for a brief period.

I decided I'd look up a girl that I once knew

I made a decision to visit a girl from my past.

I bought some flowers and went to see a girl I used to know

I purchased flowers and went to visit a girl I used to know.

The lady at her door said she had married long ago

The woman at her door informed me that she had gotten married a long time ago.

Times will change and towns will change there I was alone

Things change over time, and I found myself alone in a different place.

And suddenly I wondered would Susie be at home

Suddenly, I began to wonder if Susie, the girl I sought, would be at home.

So with some flowers in my hand I walked toward her gate

Carrying flowers, I approached her gate.

Someone touched me on the arm and said you'll have to wait

Someone interrupted me, indicating that I needed to wait.

Then I noticed there were people standing in the line

I noticed a line of people.

Some of them were holding pretty flowers just like mine

Some held flowers similar to mine.

They explained that Susie had been in an awful crash

They explained that Susie had been involved in a serious accident.

The doctors said that she had just a little while to last

Doctors predicted she had little time left to live.

When I walked into her room I felt the sense of shame

Upon entering her room, I felt a sense of guilt.

But I heard Susie whisper I'm awfully glad you came

Susie whispered that she was grateful I had come.

She had been the girl that I had always gone to see

She had been the person I had visited whenever someone I cared about had hurt me.

When someone that I cared for had been untrue to me

She was my confidante during times of others' betrayals.

I handed her the flowers and she gently kissed my hand

I gave her the flowers, and she kissed my hand, reassuring me.

She said don't be embarrassed for you know I understand

Susie consoled me, telling me not to feel embarrassed because she understood.

I said goodbye and as I bent to kiss her fevered brow

I bid farewell and leaned down to kiss her fevered forehead.

I heard her whisper thank you for the second handed flower

I heard her thank me for the second-hand flowers before she passed away.
