Country Bumpkin
Journey of a Country Soul: Life's WondersLyrics
He walked into the bar and parked his lanky frame upon a tall bar stool
Entering a bar, a tall man sat on a bar stool.
With a long soft southern drawl said I'll just have a glass of anything that's cool
He spoke with a soft southern accent, ordering any cool drink.
A barroom girl with wise and knowing eyes slowly looked me up and down
A perceptive barroom girl observed him with curiosity.
And she said I wonder how on earth that country bumpkin found his way to town
The girl wondered how a rural person like him ended up in town.
And she said hello country bumpkin
Greeting him as a "country bumpkin."
How's the frost out on the pumpkin
Playfully asking about the weather in his rural area.
I've seen some sights but man you're somethin'
Expressing amazement at his presence.
Where'd you come from country bumpkin
Questioning his origin.
Just a short year later in a bed of joy filled tears and death like pain
A year later, the narrator experienced the birth of a child, causing both joy and pain.
Into this wondrous world of many wonders another wonder came
Describing the wonder of a new life entering the world.
That same woman's face was wrapped up in a raptured look of love and tenderness
The mother looked lovingly at the child while nursing.
As I marveled at the soft and warm and cuddly boy child feeding at her breast
Observing the tender moment of the baby feeding.
And she said hello country bumpkin
Repeating the greeting as the child.
Fresh as frost out on the pumpkins
Comparing the baby to fresh frost on pumpkins.
I've seen some sights but babe you're somethin'
Expressing awe at the child's existence.
Mommy loves her country bumpkin
Declaring maternal love for the child.
Forty years of hard work later in a simple quiet and peaceful country place
After forty years, life in a peaceful rural setting.
The heavy hand of time had not erased the raptured wonder from my woman's face
The narrator's wife maintained a sense of wonder despite aging.
She was lying on her death bed knowing fully well her race was nearly run
On her deathbed, she acknowledged the end of her life.
But she softly smiled and looked into the sad eyes of her husband and her son
Smiling at her husband and son with acceptance.
And I said so long country bumpkins
Bidding farewell to the rural life and its simplicity.
The frost is gone now from the pumpkins
Referencing the changing seasons and experiences.
I've seem some sights and life's been somethin's
Reflecting on a rich and meaningful life.
See you later country bumpkins see you later country bumpkins
Saying goodbye to the rural life and its memories.
