Lyrics

My brothers said that I was rotten to the core

Others viewed me as inherently bad or flawed

I was the youngest child, so I got by with more

Being the youngest, I received leniency or special treatment

I guess she was tired by the time I came along, she'd laugh until she cried

My mother was exhausted by the time I was born, finding joy in laughter and tears easily

I could do no wrong. She would always save me, because I was her baby

My mother saw me as faultless and always protected me because I was her youngest child

I worked a factory in Ohio, a shrimp boat in the bayou

I had various jobs in different places (Ohio, the bayou, Birmingham)

I drove a truck in Birmingham

I worked as a truck driver in Birmingham

Turned 21 in Cincinnati, I called home to mom and daddy

Celebrated my 21st birthday in Cincinnati and informed my parents of my adulthood

I said your boy is now a man

Expressed to my parents that I've grown into a man

She said I don't care if your 80, you'll always be my baby

My mother reassured me that regardless of age, I'll always be her baby

She loved that photograph of our whole family

My mother cherished a specific family photo

She'd always point us out for all her friends to see

She proudly identified and praised each family member in the photo to her friends

That's Greg he's doing great, he really loves his job

She spoke positively about Greg's job

And Ronny with his to kids, how 'bout that wife he's got

Commented on Ronny's kids and his wife

And that one's kind of crazy, but that one's my baby

Identified one family member as eccentric and referred to me as her baby

I got a call in Alabama said come on home to Louisiana

Received a call summoning me back to Louisiana from Alabama

And come as fast as you can fly

Urged to return home as quickly as possible

'Cause your mama really needs you, and says shes gotta see you

Mother expressed an urgent need to see me as she might not survive the night

She might not make it through the night

Mother's condition was critical

The whole way I drove 80 so she could see her baby

I drove at a high speed so my mother could see me

She looked like she'd been sleepin'

My mother appeared peaceful or as if she were sleeping

And my family had been weeping by the time that I got to her side

Family members were in tears by the time I arrived at my mother's side

And I knew that she'd been take and my heart it was breakin'

Realized my mother had passed away and felt heartbroken

I never got to say goodbye

Didn't have the chance to bid farewell to my mother

I softly kissed that lady and cried just like a baby

I gently kissed my mother and cried intensely, resembling a baby's cry
