Lyrics

I slept last night in a good hotel

I stayed overnight in a nice hotel

I went shopping today for jewels

Today, I went shopping for expensive items like jewels

The wind rushed around in the dirty town

The wind was swirling around in the polluted city

And the children let out from the schools

Children were leaving their schools

I was standing on a noisy corner

I was standing on a loud and bustling street corner

Waiting for the walking green

Waiting for the pedestrian signal to cross the street

Across the street he stood

There was a musician across the street

And he played real good

He played his instrument skillfully

On his clarinet, for free

He played his clarinet without charge

Now me i play for fortunes

Contrasting with the musician, I perform music for wealth

And those velvet curtain calls

I receive applause and recognition in grand settings

I've got a black limousine

I own a luxurious black limousine

And two gentlemen

I am accompanied by two well-dressed men who escort me to prestigious venues

Escorting me to the halls

They guide me to performance halls

And i play if you have the money

I perform music if there's payment or if the person is a friend

Or if you're a friend to me

Contrasting with the street musician, I perform under certain conditions

But the one man band

The street musician performs alone with minimal resources

By the quick lunch stand

He was performing exceptionally well beside a fast-food stand

He was playing real good, for free

No one paid attention to his performance

Nobody stopped to hear him

Despite his talent, people ignored him

Though he played so sweet and high

Even though he played beautifully and skillfully

They knew he had never

People were aware he had never appeared on television

Been on their t.v.

He was not recognized by the public due to lack of media exposure

So they passed his music by

So people walked past him and ignored his music

I meant to go over and ask for a song

I intended to approach him and request a song or add harmony to his performance

Maybe put on a harmony...

Maybe join in and sing along with him

I heard his refrain

However, I only heard his music briefly

As the signal changed

As the traffic light changed, I moved away

He was playing real good, for free

He continued to play his music exceptionally well without expecting payment
