As they carried him from the courtroom

And were taking him away

Well, the judge, he cast his robe aside

A tear came to his eye

While the jury cried for more
The jury expressing a desire for more information or action.
"Oh, stop that cursed jury"
An appeal to silence the vocal jury members.
Cried the attendant and the nurse
Protest from the attendant and nurse about the situation.
The trial was bad enough
Describing the trial as distressing and the current situation as worse.
But this is ten times worse
Emphasis on the heightened intensity of the present moment.
Just then a bolt of lightning
A sudden and dramatic event impacting the courthouse.
Struck the courthouse out of shape
The physical distortion of the courthouse due to lightning.
And while everybody knelt to pray
The response of people in the courthouse, kneeling to pray.
The drifter did escape
The unexpected escape of the drifter during the chaos.
