Watching the river flow
Contemplating Life's Currents: Joe Cocker's 'Watching the River Flow'Lyrics
What's the matter with me,
Questioning personal state or condition
I don't have much to say,
Feeling a lack of words or thoughts
Daylight sneakin' through the window
Noticing daylight entering through a window
And I'm still in this all-night cafe.
Remaining in an all-night cafe
Walkin' to and fro beneath the moon
Walking back and forth under the moon
Out to where the trucks are rollin' slow,
Heading toward slowly moving trucks
To sit down on this bank of sand
Sitting on a bank of sand
And watch the river flow.
Observing the flow of the river
Wish I was back in the city
Desiring to be back in the city
Instead of this old bank of sand,
Disliking the current location (bank of sand)
With the sun beating down over the chimney tops
Experiencing intense sunlight over rooftops
And the one I love so close at hand.
Being close to a loved one
If I had wings and I could fly,
Wishing for the ability to fly
I know where I would go.
Knowing the desired destination if able to fly
But right now I'll just sit here so contentedly
Currently finding contentment in sitting and observing
And watch the river flow.
Continuing to watch the river flow
People disagreeing on all just about everything, yeah,
Observing widespread disagreements
Makes you stop and all wonder why.
Reflecting on the perplexity of disagreements
Why only yesterday I saw somebody on the street
Recalling a recent encounter with someone in distress
Who just couldn't help but cry.
Witnessing emotional vulnerability
Oh, this ol' river keeps on rollin', though,
Noting the persistent flow of the river
No matter what gets in the way and which way the wind does blow,
Regardless of obstacles or changing circumstances
And as long as it does I'll just sit here
Intending to continue observing the river's flow
And watch the river flow.
Committing to the act of watching the river
People disagreeing everywhere you look,
Noticing disagreements prevalent in various places
Makes you wanna stop and read a book.
Feeling a desire to seek solace in reading
Why only yesterday I saw somebody on the street
Recalling another recent encounter with shaken emotions
That was really shook.
Observing someone deeply affected emotionally
But this ol' river keeps on rollin', though,
Highlighting the persistent flow of the river
No matter what gets in the way and which way the wind does blow,
Emphasizing the river's continuity despite obstacles
And as long as it does I'll just sit here
Continuing to sit and observe the river
And watch the river flow.
Committing again to watch the river flow
Watch the river flow,
Reiterating the act of watching the river
Watchin' the river flow,
Continuously observing the river's movement
Watchin' the river flow,
Repeated emphasis on watching the river flow
But I'll sit down on this bank of sand
Reaffirming sitting on the bank and observing
And watch the river flow.
Reiterating the commitment to observe the river
