Lyrics

Frankie and Johnny were sweethearts,

Frankie and Johnny were once lovers.

Boy, how they could love!

Their love was intense and passionate.

Swore to be true to each other,

They pledged loyalty to each other.

True as the stars above!

Their commitment was as steadfast as the stars.

'Cause he was her man,

Frankie considered Johnny her man.

But he done her wrong!

He betrayed her.

One night Frankie happened to pass by the hotel;

Frankie spotted Johnny with another woman at a hotel.

Just casually glanced into a window so high,

She observed them through a window.

And who did she see but her lovin' man

Johnny was romantically involved with Nellie Bligh.

Lovin' up old Nellie Bligh!

He was unfaithful to Frankie.

She caught her man

Frankie caught Johnny in the act of betrayal.

Doin' her wrong!

He was unfaithful to her.

Well, she went round the corner to her favourite pawn shop;

Frankie went to a pawn shop with a serious intent.

This time she didn't go there for fun!

Unlike previous visits, it wasn't for amusement.

'Cause when she left, underneath her long red kimono,

She concealed a firearm under her kimono.

She was totin' a forty-four gun!

Frankie was armed and seeking revenge.

She was gunnin' for her man

She intended to confront Johnny.

Who was doin' her wrong!

He had wronged her, and she was ready to act.

Then back Frankie dashed to that hotel,

Frankie returned to the hotel in haste.

Started yankin' the bell!

She aggressively rang the bell.

She said, "Stand back, you madam and floozies,

Warning others to stay back as she threatened violence.

Or I'll blow each and every one of you straight to hell!

Frankie demanded her man back or else.

I want my man

Expressing her desire for Johnny.

Who's done me wrong!".

He had wronged her, and she wanted justice.

Johnnie, in panic, mounted the staircase,

Johnny panicked and rushed up the stairs.

Screamin', "Oh Frankie, don't shoot!"

Pleading with Frankie not to resort to violence.

Three times she pulled a trigger on a forty-four gun,

Frankie fired three shots from her .44 gun.

The gun went, "Root-toot-toot!".

The gun made a distinctive sound.

She nailed her man

Frankie successfully shot Johnny.

Who'd done her wrong!

He paid the price for his betrayal.

So they put her away in a dungeon,

Frankie was imprisoned in a grim cell.

Way up in a dark dingy cell

The cell was in a dark corner of the jail.

In the south east corner of a jail,

A desolate and harsh environment.

Where the wind seemed to blow straight from hell!

Symbolic of the challenging situation Frankie faced.

For killin' her man

Frankie was incarcerated for killing Johnny.

Who done her wrong!

His betrayal led to dire consequences for her.

But the day Frankie mounted the scaffold,

On the day of her execution, Frankie was composed.

She was just as calm as any gal could be!

She faced her fate with calmness.

And raising her eyes to heaven she cried,

Frankie looked towards heaven and expressed regret.

"Lord, I'm comin' to thee!

Her final words before meeting her maker.

I'm sorry I killed my man

Apologizing for taking Johnny's life.

Who done me wrong!".

Recognizing his wrongdoing despite her actions.
