Will You walk next to me down this narrow road

It's dark soon and I don't believe we have far to go
Acknowledging the approaching darkness and suggesting the journey is nearing its end.

Believing that the influence or legacy of those who came before will guide and lead to a comforting destination.
But if I don't have to I'd rather not walk alone
Expressing a preference for not facing the journey alone, despite the potential option to do so.
Pilgrim, all that you've worked for ain't far away
Encouraging a pilgrim by suggesting that the culmination of their efforts is close.
So lay down and rest at the end of the longest day
Advising the pilgrim to rest at the conclusion of their arduous journey.
Go down, down to the river and wash your hands
Directing the pilgrim to a symbolic act of purification, possibly in preparation for what lies ahead.
And we shall press on ahead to the promise land
Expressing determination to continue towards a promised and better place.
I know we'll be safe 'cause we'll stand at the gate
Anticipating safety at the destination, emphasizing persistence by standing at the gate and seeking entry.
And knock 'til they open it wide
Emphasizing the effort to gain entry by persistently knocking.
I stand ten times as tall when you're by my side
Feeling empowered and strengthened, standing taller with the presence of a companion.
Pilgrim, all that you've worked for ain't far away
Reiterating the proximity of the pilgrim's achievements and the suggestion to rest.
So lay down and rest at the end of the longest day
Reiterating the advice to rest at the conclusion of the journey.
Come early dawn I will have to move on
Acknowledging the need to continue the journey at the break of dawn.
