Lyrics

In our little one room country school it's where I learned to pray

In our small one-room country school, I learned the practice of praying.

A church without a steeple that's where I learned to pray

At a church lacking a steeple, I also learned to pray.

Every Sunday morning about the hour of ten

Every Sunday around 10 AM,

The door would open to our school the preacher did walk in

The school door would open, and the preacher would enter.

He'd smile and say good morning how everything today

The preacher would greet us, inquire about our well-being,

We'd bow our heads and close our eyes and then he'd say let's pray

We would lower our heads, close our eyes, and engage in prayer.

In our little one room country school it's where I learned to pray

Returning to the one-room country school, I continued learning to pray.

Our church that had no steeple is no longer there today

The church without a steeple is no longer present today.

From Monday until Friday at school we'd learn and play

Throughout the weekdays, we balanced learning and play at school.

Then back at school on Sunday that's where I learned to pray

However, on Sundays, we returned to school specifically to learn to pray.

[piano instrumental]

Our clothes were clean but faded sometimes our feet were bare

Our clothing may have been clean but faded, sometimes our feet bare.

But no one noticed anything except the Lord was there

Despite our appearance, the focus was on the presence of the Lord.

We'd come from all directions searching for the way

People came from various directions seeking guidance.

Harmonizes at school on Sunday that's where I learned to pray

Harmonizing at school on Sundays was where I continued learning to pray.

In our little one room...

Returning to the theme of the small one-room country school.
