The Shell
Embracing Silence: Lucy Dacus' Reflection on Life's Unseen RealitiesLyrics
I'm a ghost
I feel disconnected or unseen, like a ghost.
Walking in a boring dream
Existing in a monotonous or uninteresting reality.
You are there
Someone important is present.
Talking and I'm not listening
Not actively engaged in the conversation.
I am busy doing nothing
Occupied with unproductive activities.
And you're rudely interrupting
Feeling disrupted by external interruptions.
It's a myth and now I see it clearly
A realization that certain beliefs are unfounded.
You don't have to be sad to make something worth hearing
Quality art doesn't require sadness as inspiration.
Now I'm calm and I'm content
Having achieved peace and satisfaction.
One more burden off my back
A sense of relief from a lifted burden.
You don't wanna be a creator
Rejecting the pressure to be a creative force.
Doesn't mean you've got nothing to say
Having valuable thoughts even without being a creator.
Put down the pen, don't let it force your hand
Choosing not to let artistic expression dictate actions.
I'm a ghost
Reiterating the feeling of being unseen or unnoticed.
Walking on an empty street
Navigating a desolate and lonely path.
No name anymore
Losing personal identity or recognition.
No need to call for me
No one needs to reach out or look for me.
I'm a long-lost hometown hero
Identifying as a forgotten local hero.
Late to legendary past lives within me
Nostalgia for past glories that linger within.
If I had the offer to do it again
If given a chance, reconsidering choices for strength, invisibility, or ignorance.
Make me invincible, invisible, or brain dead
Expressing a desire for characteristics that shield from vulnerability.
If the body and the life were two things that we could divide
Musing on the separation of physical existence and life experiences.
I'd deliver up my shell to be filled with somebody else
Offering one's external self to be filled with another's essence.
You don't wanna be a creator
Reiterating the rejection of societal expectations to be a creator.
Doesn't mean you've got nothing to say
Having a valuable voice despite not being a creator.
Put down the pen, don't let it force your hand
Advising against letting artistic pressure dictate actions.
You don't wanna be a leader
Declining the pressure to be a leader.
Doesn't mean you don't know the way
Knowledge of the way forward despite not being a leader.
Hold your own hand, walk on without a plan
Navigating life without a predefined plan.
