Being born is seen as a burden, while dying at a young age is considered even worse.
Finding love is the meaning of life
Discovering love is believed to hold the ultimate significance in life.
In the land of freedom, in invisible chains
In a country that prides itself on freedom, there are unseen restrictions and limitations.
You get when you pay for, sometimes you pay twice
You often receive what you pay for, but occasionally, you pay the price twice.
And you go through the motions, confused and alone
Going through life's motions feeling perplexed and isolated.
And wonder why truth ain't easy to see
Expressing confusion about why truth is difficult to perceive or comprehend.
And they put you through school and tell you your grown
Society educates you, declares you an adult, and then compels you to work to acquire unnecessary possessions.
Then put you to work to buy shit you don't need
Being pushed into a work-centric life to purchase things that aren't essential.
What's the matter with being a loner
Questioning the negative stigma associated with being a loner.
Even a nobody's somebody too
Asserting that even those seemingly insignificant hold value as individuals.
Even the bums on the street are just dreamers
Emphasizing that even homeless individuals have dreams and aspirations.
A face in the crowd no different than you
Stating that everyone, regardless of their status, is just another person in a crowd.
If you don't fit the mold, they call you a failure
When you don't conform to societal norms, you're often labeled as a failure.
Travel too much and they'll say that you're lost
Being judged for exploring and traveling too much, considered lost or directionless.
You can take your pick, you either came from an ape
Presenting the contrasting beliefs of human origins: evolution or religious creationism.
Or the dad of a magic man up on a cross
Referencing the debate between evolution (coming from an ape) and religious beliefs (son of a divine figure on a cross).
And loneliness follows it's always there with you
Loneliness is an ever-present companion throughout life's different stages.
Through marriages, mortgages, sickness and health
Despite marriages, financial commitments, sickness, and well-being, loneliness persists.
You fight your whole life to be who you are and
The ongoing struggle to embrace one's identity and eventually considering becoming someone else.
Decide that you'd rather be somebody else
Deciding that it might be preferable to assume a different identity than one's true self.
What's the matter with being a loner
Reiterating the inquiry about the stigma associated with being a loner.
Even a nobody's somebody too
Restating that even seemingly insignificant individuals hold their own importance.
Even the bums on the street are just dreamers
Reiterating that homeless individuals, just like anyone else, have aspirations and dreams.
A face in the crowd no different than you
