Years ago, I knew a man,

He was my mother's biggest fan

That he brought out all his toys

And how the mother did explain
Explaining the mother's attempt to alleviate the pain.
Trying to take away the pain
Describing the mother's efforts to console and comfort.
But, he just couldn't understand
Expressing the boy's difficulty in understanding his father's absence.
That his father was not a man
Revealing that the father was not present as expected.
And it all was just a game
Suggesting that the family dynamics were like a game.
The years have passed and so have I
Reflecting on the passage of time and personal growth.
Making it hard for me to cry
Expressing difficulty in showing vulnerability or sadness.
And if and when I have a son
Contemplating the possibility of having a son.
Let it all be said and done
Desiring resolution and closure for future generations.
Let the sadness pass him by
Hoping that the next generation will be spared from sadness.
