Lyrics

I used to think joy, was the break between sorrow,

I used to believe that joy was the interval between moments of sorrow.

Like peace was the break between wars,

Similar to the idea that peace was the time between periods of war.

I'm still partly new now, but mostly older,

Though I still have some new perspectives, I've gained more experience and age.

And I can not say I'm so sure.

I can't confidently assert that my current beliefs are absolute.

Chorus

< em > Chorus

I never trusted happiness, as far as I could throw it,

I never fully trusted happiness; skepticism made me cautious.

Always preparing for the worst, 'cause I would know it,

Constantly preparing for the worst, anticipating its arrival.

All of that hammering in the dark, like a new noah working on his ark,

Engaging in persistent effort, like Noah building his ark in the dark.

On his ark.

Repetition of the ark metaphor, emphasizing the ongoing struggle.

I may look back at today and feel foolish,

Looking back, I might see today as foolish; acknowledging a shift in perspective.

My old view was right all along,

Suggesting a previous worldview that is now considered correct.

I will rush in, where no angels are walking,

Willing to enter challenging situations where even angels fear to tread.

And fight for the right to be wrong.

Choosing to fight for the right to make mistakes.

Chorus

< em > Chorus

'cause I never trusted happiness, as far as I could throw it,

The lack of complete trust in happiness remains, with an expectation of adversity.

Always preparing for the worst, 'cause I would know it,

Continuing to brace for the worst, based on a history of knowing it.

Of that hammering in the dark, like a new noah working on his ark,

Repeated imagery of persistent effort in the darkness, akin to Noah's ark building.

On his ark.

Reiteration of the ongoing struggle symbolized by Noah's ark.

Between my potential and the deep blue sea,

Between the potential I have and the vast unknown, there are challenges and valuable experiences.

There's a rock and a diamond either side of me,

A metaphorical representation of life's challenges and rewards surrounding an individual.

Between our potential and the break of day,

Applying the concept to collective potential and the promise of a new day.

There is nothing at all in our way,

Emphasizing that nothing obstructs our collective progress toward a better future.

Nothing in our way.

A declaration that there are no hindrances in our collective path.
