Reflecting on a pause in the rain hitting the windows

In the late days before July

We used our bodies against our reason

Engaging in physical actions despite logical thinking

As we threw ourselves from in to outside

Through the glass we'd pass the graveyards

Observing graveyards while passing through glass

The speed was part of killing our time

Speed as a way of passing time

Our mouths were moving suggesting promise

Communication with suggestions of promise

Smartly promise can change into lies

Warning that promises can transform into lies


Caught in a car you weren't driving

Being in a situation without control

Wondered where they'd let you off

Contemplating where one would end up

Before the impact you smiled

Smiling before an impending impact

Before the impact you said what a great summer night

Recalling a positive remark about the night


You were looking at your fingers

Observing someone focusing on their fingers

You were counting for control

Counting, possibly for self-control

I'd never heard so much quiet

Experiencing an unusual amount of quietness

I'd never heard so little breath

Noticing a lack of breath or conversation

Or so few of your words

Highlighting the scarcity of spoken words


Ahead of safety we'd gone much farther

Going beyond safety limits

Faster the trees blurred the lines

Increased speed causing blurred perceptions

The last few moments the seconds slowed up

Perceiving time slowing down in critical moments

As the tires pointed at the sky

Describing the dramatic positioning of tires


Caught in a car you weren't driving

Reiteration of being in a situation without control

Wondered where they'd let you off

Revisiting thoughts about where the situation would end

Before the impact you smiled
