Lyrics

When I was young, it really sucked

Reflecting on a challenging or unpleasant childhood experience

My parents always told me what to do

Parents were authoritative, giving instructions and guidance

They said that when I grow up

Parents' promise that adulthood comes with freedom to make rules

And get my own house I could make the rules

Adult now, moved out, living in a place with an association

So now I am an adult

Expressing current adult status

And I have since moved out

Moved out of parents' house

To a place that has an association

Current residence has a homeowners' association (HOA)

But I disappoint them too

Disappointing the association, possibly due to neglecting property

All because my grass grew

Association displeased with overgrown grass during vacation

Just a bit too high when I was on vacation

Association notified the artist with a letter

There's a letter in the mailbox now and this what it says

Received another letter stating a fine for HOA rule violation

I got fined by the HOA again

Fined for putting a shed in the backyard

I put a shed in my backyard

Shed used for storage, but neighbors disapprove of its location

For storage and I use it all the time

Artist's perspective on the neighbors' complaint

I found out my neighbors think

Neighbors upset about the shed's proximity to the property line

That it's too close to the property line

Neighbor's discontent escalates to involvement of HOA president

So now they are mad at me

Pressured by the HOA and neighbors to relocate the shed

The president's involved

Resistance to moving the shed, feeling it's unnecessary

And they're pressuring me every day to move it

Contemplating consequences if the shed isn't moved

I don't think I should have to

Another letter in the mailbox, indicating additional fines

Cuz it's not in their way

Frustration with recurring fines and HOA rules

But if I don't they say I have to lose it

Considering not moving the shed, asserting its non-interference

There's another letter in the mailbox and guess what it says?

Received a new letter confirming fines from the HOA

I got fined by the HOA again

Fined again despite artist's perspective on the shed

I got so sick of their shtick

Reached a breaking point with HOA's actions

I thought that I could beat them at their game

Attempted to challenge the HOA through strategic means

I waited for someone on the board

Waited for a board member resignation to enter the scene

To resign and then I threw in my name

Joined the HOA board to influence decisions

So now I'm the president

Became the president of the HOA

And all the fines have stopped

Fines ceased under new leadership

And I can tell that I've ruffled some feathers

Stirred controversy among HOA members

They know why I did it

HOA members aware of the artist's motivations

But they haven't kicked me out

HOA hasn't expelled the artist despite the controversial move

All I wanted was to not receive more letters

Artist's primary goal was to stop receiving fines

So today I checked the mailbox and guess what I didn't get

No new fine received, indicating success as HOA president

A new fine from the HOA again

Relief from HOA fines confirmed

No more fines from the HOA

Expressing satisfaction with the current situation

Cuz I am the HOA

Personal decision to avoid living under an HOA again

Won't live in an HOA again

Firm resolve to maintain independence from HOA restrictions
