Lyrics

I've been a moonshiner,

I have been engaged in the illegal production of distilled alcohol (moonshining).

For seventeen long years,

For a period of seventeen years.

I've spent all my money,

I have spent all my money.

On whiskey and beer,

On purchasing whiskey and beer.

I go to some hollow,

I visit a secluded area.

And sit at my still

And sit at my still (moonshine distillation apparatus).

And if whiskey don't kill me,

If consuming whiskey doesn't lead to my demise.

Then I don't know what will,

Then I am uncertain about what could.

I go to some bar room,

I frequent a bar.

And drink with my friends,

And enjoy the company of my friends.

Where the women can't follow,

Where women are not welcome.

And see what I spend,

To see how much money I spend.

God bless them pretty women,

Expressing admiration for attractive women.

I wish they was mine,

Expressing a desire for these women to be his.

Their breath is as sweet as,

Comparing their breath to the sweetness of dew on the vine.

The dew on the vine,

Highlighting the pleasant nature of their breath.

Let me eat when I am hungry,

Expressing basic needs - to eat when hungry.

Let me drink when I am dry,

To drink when thirsty.

A dollar when I am hard up,

To have a dollar when facing financial difficulties.

Religion when I die,

To find solace in religion upon death.

The whole world's a bottle,

Viewing the entire world as a bottle.

And life's but a dram,

Considering life as a small measure (dram) in that bottle.

When the bottle gets empty,

When the bottle is empty, life loses its value.

It sure ain't worth a damn.

Life becomes worthless when the bottle is devoid of contents.
