We Were Boys
Memoirs of Brotherhood: Echoes from Our YouthLyrics
If you look real close
If you observe closely
You can see it there
You'll notice it present
Right above my eye
Directly above my eye
There's a scar I wear
There's a visible mark that I carry
And I can't recall
And I cannot remember
Who started it
Who initiated the conflict
But I ran my mouth a little too much
But I spoke impulsively or indiscreetly
The day my face met your fist
The day I received a punch to my face
I never thought I'd hear you say I'm sorry
I never expected to hear your apology
But your mom said that you didn't have a choice
However, your mother indicated you had no alternative
We were boys
We were young males
It was junior year
It was our third year in high school
We started our first band
We formed our initial musical group
With my dad's guitar
Utilizing my father's guitar
And a pawn shop amp
And an amplifier from a pawn shop
We were writing songs
We were composing original songs
And singing covers
And performing others' music
The year that we became
The time when we formed a strong bond
A band of brothers
As close friends like brothers
We thought that we were headed for gold records
We believed success in music was imminent
When really we were making lots of noise
But, in reality, we were just making noise
We were boys
We were young males
A lot sure happened because of those days
A lot of significant events occurred during those times
And somewhere along the way we became men
And at some point, we matured into adults
I learned what matters, and I found my place
I understood what truly holds importance, and I discovered my purpose
But most of all how to be a friend
Above all, I learned how to be a loyal companion
Now it don't seem fair
Now, it feels unjust
That all of you that's left
That all that remains of you
Is an old voicemail
Is an old recorded message
And this scar I wear
And this visible mark that I carry
But you still live on
However, you continue to exist
In my memories
In my recollections
And every thought of you brings back
And every thought of you evokes
The boy in me
The younger version of myself
I wanna live each day that I'll be given
I desire to live each day given to me
Remembering to make the kind of joy
Remembering to create the type of happiness
When we were boys
We experienced when we were young males
