Calling the child to wake up.
Thou wast thy mother's only joy:
The child brought happiness to the mother.
Why dost thou weep in thy gentle sleep?
Questioning why the child is crying in a peaceful sleep.
Awake! Thy father does thee keep
Encouraging the child to wake up because the father is watching over.
O, what land is the land of dreams?
Pondering about the mysterious land of dreams.
What are it's mountains
Asking about the features of the land of dreams.
And what are it's streams?
Seeking information about its mountains and streams.
O father, I saw my mother there
The child saw the mother in the land of dreams.
Among the lillies by waters fair
Describing the mother's presence among lilies near beautiful waters.
Among the lambs clothed in white
Depicting the mother among white-clothed lambs in happiness.
She walked with her Thomas in sweet delight
Recalling the mother walking with someone named Thomas in delight.
I wept for joy, like a dove I mourn
Expressing tears of joy and mourning like a dove.
O when shall I again return?
Yearning for the moment to return to that joy.
Dear child, I also by pleasant streams
The speaker also wandered in dreamland by pleasant streams.
Have wandered all night in the land of dreams
Describing a night spent wandering in the land of dreams.
But though calm and warm the waters wide
Despite calm and warm waters, unable to reach the other side.
I could not get to the other side
Struggling to cross to a different realm in dreamland.
Father, o father, what do we here
The child questions the purpose in a land of disbelief and fear.
In this land of unbelief and fear?
Contrasting the land of dreams as better than the current reality.
The land of dreams is better far
Expressing the superiority of the land of dreams over mundane life.
Above the light of the morning star
Describing the land of dreams as surpassing the morning star's light.
