And I Have Seen the World of Dreams
Journey through Dreamscapes: Okkervil River's Poetic OdysseyLyrics
I have seen the world of dreams,
I have experienced the realm of dreams.
fresh-flown through the trees then dropped off at the curb alive,
Dreams that feel fresh and vivid, like flying through trees, then abruptly returning to reality at the curb, still alive.
have seen the world awake, and I don't know which I deserve.
I have witnessed the world both in dreams and waking life, questioning my deservingness of either.
So when sleep nightly comes to me, with all of these warm blankets piled on my back,
When I go to sleep, I am covered with warm blankets, creating a comforting environment.
I'll hike to see the church of dreams, where all of the shutters are painted black.
During sleep, I embark on a journey to a dream-like church with black-painted shutters.
And it seems like that's real until the time I awake,
These dream experiences feel real until I wake up.
and at midnight the moonlight reflects as the lake is shining at me,
At midnight, the moonlight reflects on a lake, creating a surreal atmosphere.
until night takes it away. There's one world in the distance, one world in the way,
A distant world and an obstructing one exist, but neither can persist.
and not one can stay.
No world can endure permanently.
I have seen the wood of dreams, carved grainless and clean with a sweep of one hand,
I have perceived a dream-like forest, beautifully carved with a single sweep of a hand.
and have been happy with the leaves on my body when laid under land.
I find joy in the simplicity of the dream, lying beneath the earth covered with leaves.
So when sleep finally comes to me - because it comes for the sleek like it comes for the lame -
When sleep finally comes, it embraces both the sleek and the lame, offering a sense of equality.
I'll sink beneath a weight of dreams so full and complete that I'm pushed from my name.
Sinking under the weight of dreams so profound that my identity is overshadowed.
And it seems like that's real until I fall asleep, and then we load up the car
Similar to the waking world, dreams feel real until falling asleep again, prompting a journey to a new life.
and drive far to some street where a new life awaits, until day takes it away.
We embark on a drive to a street where a different existence awaits until daybreak takes it away.
There's one world in the distance, one world in the way,
There are distant and obstructing worlds, yet none can endure permanently.
and not one can stay.
No world can persist indefinitely.
