Lyrics

There was a boy who knew

Introduction of a boy who believed in his potential.

He could be anything that he wanted to.

Emphasizing the boy's belief in his ability to choose his path.

Everybody told him he had a singular destiny.

Others saw a special destiny for him.

Everybody said he'd go far--

Expectations of great success from everyone.

Everybody said he'd be a star.

Anticipation of the boy becoming a star.

They said he could be anything he wanted to be--

Reiteration of the freedom to choose any path.

Then he turned into me.

The twist: The boy becomes the speaker ("me").

Now it seems increasingly unlikely

Expressing doubt about achieving a heroic fate.

That I'm gonna grow up to be Luke Skywalker--

Unlikely to become Luke Skywalker.

Not gonna be Indiana Jones.

Not aspiring to be Indiana Jones either.

And after all this time

Reflection on the passage of time.

It's probably not gonna turn out

Diminished hope for a super-powered destiny.

That I'm the super-powered heir

No longer the heir to a vanished world.

To a world that isn't there anymore.

Acknowledgment of a lost, fantastical heritage.

But somebody told me I was special.

Someone believed in the speaker's uniqueness.

Somebody told me that I could be

Encouragement to pursue any desired goal.

Anything I wanted to be.

Discrepancy between personal and others' dreams.

How could they have known the dreams I had

Questioning how well others knew the speaker's desires.

Were not the dreams they had for me?

Recognition of a gap between expectations and reality.

They said I could be what I wanted--

Reiteration of freedom to choose, despite misunderstanding.

They had no idea what I wanted.

The speaker's undisclosed desires differ from expectations.

And I don't mean to seem ungrateful

Acknowledging gratitude but expressing a need for personal choice.

For all their encouragement and praise.

Appreciation for encouragement but asserting individual intentions.

I just meant to say that I don't intend

Clarification of not settling for unfulfilling circumstances.

To stay and spend

Expressing a determination to avoid wasting more time.

Another wasted year, cause at the end

Avoiding another year of stagnation.

I bet I'd still be sitting here

Expectation of remaining in a stagnant state.

Wasting time and waiting.

Impatience and frustration with waiting.

I'm waiting for my Lady of the Lake

Waiting for a symbolic moment of recognition and success.

To come and crown me king.

Anticipating a transformative event for empowerment.

I'm waiting for my rocket to land

Waiting for a significant event to grant special abilities.

So I can get my power ring.

Desiring a powerful object or status.

I'm waiting for my radioactive meteorite to fall.

Anticipation of a life-altering event.

I'm waiting but I ain't got no meteorite at all.

Frustration with the delay in significant events.

I'm waiting for my story to begin.

Waiting for the start of the speaker's narrative.

I'm waiting for my... I'm not done.

Interrupted thought, emphasizing incompleteness.

Don't count me out of it--

Asserting resilience despite setbacks.

My story isn't over yet.

Insistence on an ongoing, unfinished story.

I'm not the son of some Roman god but anyway

Denying mythical parentage but asserting personal strength.

I think I'm gonna be okay.

Optimism about personal well-being despite challenges.

And looking back I find it seems

Reflecting on a history of improbable dreams.

I've always had unlikely dreams

Despite unlikely dreams, a determination to move forward.

But I can't let that stop me now,

Acknowledgment of challenges but a commitment to progress.

It's time to grow up anyhow.

Declaration of readiness to mature and face responsibilities.

And I may not be Hercules

Acceptance of not possessing extraordinary strength.

But here's my new philosophy:

Introduction of a new life philosophy despite limitations.
