How firm a foundation, you saints of the Lord
The foundation for the faith of the saints in the Lord is solid and unshakable.
Is laid for your faith in His excellent Word
This foundation is established based on the trustworthy and excellent Word of God.
What more can He say than to you He has said
God has already communicated everything essential; there is nothing more He needs to say.
To you who for refuge to Jesus have fled
To those who seek refuge in Jesus, God provides support and protection.
Fear not, I am with you, O be not dismayed
Do not fear or be discouraged, as God assures His constant presence.
For I am your God and will still give you aid
God declares Himself as the personal God who will continue to assist.
I'll strengthen you, help you, and cause you to stand
He promises to provide strength, help, and the ability to stand firm.
Upheld by My righteous, omnipotent hand
God's righteous and all-powerful hand will uphold and support.
When through the deep waters I call you to go
In times of deep challenges, when God calls, the waters of sorrow will not overwhelm.
The rivers of sorrow shall not overflow
God's presence will prevent overwhelming sorrow, and troubles will not overflow.
For I will be with you, your troubles to bless
God promises to be with His followers, blessing them even in their troubles.
And sanctify to you your deepest distress
Difficulties will be transformed and sanctified, bringing spiritual growth.
When through fiery trials thy pathways shall lie
During fiery trials, God's abundant grace will be more than enough for sustenance.
My grace, all sufficient, shall be your supply
The flames of adversity will not harm; God has a purpose to refine and purify.
The flame shall not hurt you; I only design
Adversity is designed to consume impurities (dross) and refine the precious (gold).
Your dross to consume, and your gold to refine
The soul that on Jesus has leaned for repose
A soul that finds rest in Jesus will not be abandoned or deserted.
I will not, I will not desert to its foes
Even in the face of opposition, God will not forsake those who trust in Him.
That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake
Despite any efforts by hell or enemies, God will remain steadfast in support.
I'll never, no never, no never forsake
God emphatically declares that He will never, under any circumstance, forsake His followers.
