Viewing life as a marketplace, where one's existence is akin to a product on display.
And yourself as a product displayed in easy reach
Considering oneself as a commodity easily accessible to others.
And you laid there for some quite some time now and pondered at your fate
Reflecting on one's fate and contemplating the timing of entering the "market."
Then you begin to wonder if maybe you'd hit the market late
Doubting if one entered the competitive world at the right time.
Wealth had looked you over once and seen you at your best
Wealth evaluating the individual but finding them unsuitable for its needs.
But somehow you didn't fit his needs so he took one of the rest
Being rejected by wealth in favor of others.
Love had read your label and you lingered in her mind
Love considering the person but choosing someone else.
But the competition caught her eye and she left you there behind
Being left behind due to competition in the realm of love.
Fame had brushed the edges or the counter where you lay
Fame showing interest briefly but ultimately moving on.
And she pondered for a moment but then she walked away
Fame walking away without fully embracing the individual.
Lady Luck had even picked you up but then you heard her say
Lady Luck considering the person but deciding they are too costly.
I just can't afford you so I'll have to let you lay
Being rejected by Lady Luck due to affordability issues.
Then one day they marked you down put you up on sale
Being marked down for sale, facing another round of evaluation.
And you got looked over once again but all to no avail
Despite being examined again, not finding a suitable buyer.
Now stained with yellow marked with age you heard a salesman state
Now showing signs of wear and age, facing possible disposal.
Boss I guess I'll throw this out it's old and out of date
The decision to discard the individual due to being outdated.
The keeper of the shop came then and he seemed to understand
The shopkeeper understanding the value and potential of the individual.
He smiled and looked you over and out a caring hand
The shopkeeper expressing care and deciding to keep the individual despite their flaws.
Give me that I'll take it home don't throw it on the street
Expressing the decision to take the individual home instead of discarding them.
It's old and gray but in its way it'll help my shop complete
