And tradition has to stand

Challenging the need for tradition to persist

But I think that God’s bigger than that

Reiterating the belief in a God beyond narrow confines


Some say that I’m a liberal

Acknowledging differing perceptions of the speaker

Some say that I’m a saint

Claiming sainthood while acknowledging personal flaws

But I’m just a messed up sinner

Self-identification as a flawed individual on a faith journey

Working out my faith

Expressing humility and uncertainty in religious understanding

I don’t say that I know it all

Admitting a lack of complete knowledge

And I pick apart the facts

Engaging critically with information and beliefs

And if there’s a God I think He’s ok with that

Believing in a God accepting of questioning and doubt


He made friends with criminals

Highlighting Jesus' association with societal outcasts

And hung around with hoars

Emphasizing Jesus' interactions with marginalized individuals

Had dinner with a con man

Referencing Jesus dining with a person of questionable reputation

And the poorest of the poor

Noting Jesus' concern for the poorest members of society

Had no time for the proud elite

Rejecting exclusivity and arrogance of the elite

Or their self righteous act

Rejecting self-righteous attitudes and actions

Because God is love and love’s bigger than that

Asserting God's essence as love transcending judgment


God know that to get things right

Acknowledging the difficulty of achieving righteousness

Ain’t no easy feat

Recognizing the challenge of finding the right path

And I know that salvation’s free

Acknowledging the cost of salvation

But I know that it ain’t cheap

Understanding that salvation requires commitment

He said the way is narrow

Referring to the narrowness of the righteous path

But grace will cover that

Believing in the covering grace for human imperfections

And to tell the truth I’m Ok with that

Expressing acceptance of the complexities of faith
