Bigger than That
Embracing a Love Bigger than DifferencesLyrics
Well I’ve seen a lot of hatred
Observation of a significant amount of hatred
And I’ve seen a lot of pain
Observation of considerable pain
And I’ve seen a lot war
Observation of war and its repetitive nature
They’re fighting again and again and again
Highlighting the recurring cycles of conflict
They say that God is on their side
Reference to people claiming divine support for their actions
And they say that that’s a fact
Emphasizing the assertion of God's alignment with certain beliefs
But I think that God’s bigger than that
Expressing the belief that God transcends such narrow perspectives
I’ve heard them say he’ll go to hell
Referring to condemnation of love between same genders
The man who loves a man
Addressing societal judgment towards same-sex relationships
And the woman in the pulpit
Commenting on criticism of a woman in a leadership role
Who’s she’s teaching like she can
Questioning the rigidity of traditions and dogma
Cos everything has been worked out
Asserting that everything has been predetermined
And tradition has to stand
Challenging the need for tradition to persist
But I think that God’s bigger than that
Reiterating the belief in a God beyond narrow confines
Some say that I’m a liberal
Acknowledging differing perceptions of the speaker
Some say that I’m a saint
Claiming sainthood while acknowledging personal flaws
But I’m just a messed up sinner
Self-identification as a flawed individual on a faith journey
Working out my faith
Expressing humility and uncertainty in religious understanding
I don’t say that I know it all
Admitting a lack of complete knowledge
And I pick apart the facts
Engaging critically with information and beliefs
And if there’s a God I think He’s ok with that
Believing in a God accepting of questioning and doubt
He made friends with criminals
Highlighting Jesus' association with societal outcasts
And hung around with hoars
Emphasizing Jesus' interactions with marginalized individuals
Had dinner with a con man
Referencing Jesus dining with a person of questionable reputation
And the poorest of the poor
Noting Jesus' concern for the poorest members of society
Had no time for the proud elite
Rejecting exclusivity and arrogance of the elite
Or their self righteous act
Rejecting self-righteous attitudes and actions
Because God is love and love’s bigger than that
Asserting God's essence as love transcending judgment
God know that to get things right
Acknowledging the difficulty of achieving righteousness
Ain’t no easy feat
Recognizing the challenge of finding the right path
And I know that salvation’s free
Acknowledging the cost of salvation
But I know that it ain’t cheap
Understanding that salvation requires commitment
He said the way is narrow
Referring to the narrowness of the righteous path
But grace will cover that
Believing in the covering grace for human imperfections
And to tell the truth I’m Ok with that
Expressing acceptance of the complexities of faith
