Race to Be King

We left our sweethearts
We departed from our loved ones.
And our wives along that pier

"Cheer up", they said

"You'll soon return in half a year"

So we sailed up north to reach the ice

We took full sails

Each boat was manned with guns
Equipped boats with weapons and ropes for whale hunting.
And rope to hunt that whale
Prepared for the challenges of whaling.
We know, that we're fighting
Acknowledging the tough conditions they face in the freezing environment.
In this frost on our own
Fighting against the elements on their own.
And we'll see no sound
Expecting a lack of familiar sounds and sights.
Or sight of our homes
Acknowledging the absence of home comforts.
And our lovers will be
Believing that their lovers will patiently wait for their return.
Waiting there till spring

It's a ramble and a race to be king

Now we've been sailing a league or three
Having sailed a considerable distance.
Till we glimpsed that shore
Spotting the shoreline after an extended journey.
The night was dark and won no hearts
The night was dark and did not bring joy or warmth.
So we stayed on board
Choosing to remain on the ship due to unfavorable conditions ashore.
There fired a shot along our deck
Experiencing an attack with a shot fired across the ship's deck.
And down one side
The shot damaged the mast and affected the ship's structure.
And it cracked our mast and swept in fast

Our bird she cried out
