They acted against established laws
Three brothers being wet and weary
Three brothers were tired and soaked
Off a-poaching they did go
They went poaching (illegally hunting game)
Off to Oakham Woods they rambled
They wandered into Oakham Woods
In among the briars and brambles
Amid thorny bushes and shrubs
And it’s outside but near the centre
Outside but close to the center of something (ambiguous)
Into ambush they did lie
They laid in wait for an ambush
These three brothers, being brave-hearted
The brothers were courageous
They boldly kept on firing
They continued shooting boldly
Until one of ‘em got a fatal blow
One of them received a fatal injury
And it showed they was overthrown
Indicates their defeat or loss
Off to Stamford Jail they were taken
They were taken to Stamford Jail
And so cruelly were they beaten
They were severely beaten in jail
And it’s in Stamford Jail they now do lie
They are currently imprisoned in Stamford Jail
Until their trial comes on
Awaiting their trial
So come all you gallant poachers
An appeal to other poachers
That does hear of we three brothers
Asking others to acknowledge their plight
For it’s our brother’s sake made our hearts ache
Their hearts ache for their imprisoned brother
And we’re bound with him to die
They feel bound to solidarity and a shared fate
