The Truth
Imprisoned Reflections: Confronting TruthLyrics
In the blue of the evening when the sun is low
In the evening twilight, when the sun is setting
There's a shadow that creeps across my cell block floor
A shadow moves silently across the floor of my prison cell
And it comes to remind me what I'm in here for
It serves as a reminder of the reason for my imprisonment
No, I'm not admittin' that I done the crime
I won't admit to committing the crime
I'm only getting down to doin' time
I'm only accepting the consequences and serving my time
The passin' of day is no concern of mine
The passing of time outside the prison walls is not my concern
There's a guard on the second shift comes on at three
A guard on the second shift, starting at three o'clock
And he's always about a half inch off of me
He constantly stays close to me, as if reminding me of my lack of freedom
Like he needs to keep remindin' me that I'm not free
His presence is a continual reminder of my imprisonment
God forgive him 'cause he doesn't see
Forgive the guard, as he is blind to his own imprisonment despite holding the key
He's no less a prisoner 'cause he holds a key
He is no less a prisoner because he has authority
And God forbid he turn his back on me
It would be unfortunate if he were to betray me
For every wall you build around your fear
Every barrier created out of fear gives rise to a multitude of darker things
A thousand darker things are born in here
These dark elements thrive on disdain for what you value
There fed on contempt for all that you hold dear
They are nourished by contempt for all that is dear to you
The truth is it doesn't matter what you do
The fundamental reality is that your actions don't matter until you confront yourself truthfully
'Til you gaze in that mirror with an eye that's true
True understanding only comes when you honestly look at yourself in the mirror
And admit that what scares you is the me in you
Admitting that what frightens you is the reflection of yourself in others
