You want to own things
You desire ownership of things.
Because your mockingbird never sings
Your mockingbird doesn't sing, possibly reflecting a lack of creativity or expression.
You clipped its wings
You have restricted its freedom or potential (clipped its wings).
Trapping it in its cage and waiting for the music that it brings
The bird is trapped in a cage, and you wait for the music it brings, suggesting a desire for controlled creativity.
And now it's silent
The bird is now silent, possibly indicating the suppression of creativity or individuality.
So, you go outside and search the sky but it's quiet
You search for inspiration outside but find silence.
See, creatures that are meant to fly
Creatures meant to fly (metaphorically, free spirits) resist being caught.
Don't take too kindly when you catch our kind
There's resistance when you try to control or confine those with a free spirit.
But we gather our feathers and light a fire
Despite resistance, the free-spirited gather strength and ignite a powerful force.
That reaches the heavens and goes higher and higher
They reach greater heights, symbolizing overcoming obstacles and limitations.
Why don't you want to pay me?
Questioning why payment is withheld, possibly metaphorical for recognition or acknowledgment.
What you owe me?
Asking for what is owed, whether recognition, respect, or something else.
Instead you're telling everybody I'm not worthy
Others discredit or undervalue, but followers persist.
But you still follow me
Despite criticism, there is continued attention or pursuit.
Try to swallow me
Attempts to suppress or consume the speaker.
To fill the hollow in you with me
Efforts to fill an emotional void with the speaker.
But you never could afford me
You were never able to afford or truly understand the speaker.
You want to be the boss
Desire for control and authority, wanting to be the boss.
Catching your elves and putting them in a music box
Capturing and controlling others in a confined space, like a music box.
Keeping it closed, to keep them under your watch
Keeping control to observe those under your influence.
And then demanding that they sing on your clock
Demands for creative output on your terms and schedule.
But like boxes and cages
Similar to boxes and cages, individuals can break free and redefine their stories.
Birds and elves are able
Both birds and elves have the capacity to break free from constraints.
To tear their own pages
Individuals can rewrite their own narratives, overcoming past limitations.
Rewrite their sadly written fable
Empowerment to redefine one's story, overcoming a sad past.
And what do you want under your name?
Questioning what legacy or impact you want to leave.
