People give up drinking and smoking to avoid being perceived as lower than their aspirations dictate.

We are all controlled by fear of the unknown
Fear of the unknown governs our actions because we are not fully informed.

Lack of complete information leads to fear and control.

So we accept exploitation and show no resistance
