She lived a long life for a widow she became

Emily's limited activities - cooking, sewing, and behaving.
So with a needle and thread she sent a man to his grave

For 40 long years she held the wrath of his hand

She feared for her life ever since they wed

But only in her dreams had Mr. Crane ever bled

After a quiet spell Emily felt a fear
Emily's fear increases as she grows old and weak.
She was old and growing weak so her end must be near
Emily contemplates her impending end.
When she sat down to pray her mind began to devise
While praying, Emily plans a final gift for Mr. Crane.
A last gift to Mr. Crane, a deserving surprise

The whiskey did its trick and Mr. Crane was asleep
Emily uses whiskey to make Mr. Crane sleep.
So Emily smoothed out the corners of his sheets
She prepares his bed while he's asleep.
She silently prepared her best needle and thread
Emily gets her needle and thread ready.
And stitched around his body and over his head
She starts sewing around Mr. Crane's body.
In a deep drunk slumber Mr. Crane slept on
Mr. Crane continues sleeping deeply.
And Emily did sew till every opening was gone
Emily sews until all openings are closed.
In the grey moonlight she held a rolling pin
Emily holds a rolling pin under the moonlight.
Lifted it over her head and exhaled with a grin
She raises the rolling pin with a grin.
Emily swung down and felt her strength return
Emily strikes Mr. Crane, feeling empowered.
Said goodbye to the stranglings and the bruises and burns
Emily bids farewell to the abuse she endured.
Mr. Crane fought and screamed with every ounce of his will
Mr. Crane resists, but Emily beats him until he's still.
But Emily beat the bloody bed until the old man lay still
Emily's triumph over Mr. Crane's violence.
